July Monsoon Revival Explained: Why Near-Normal Rain Did Not Erase India’s Deficit

Why in News

India received near-normal to slightly above-normal rainfall during July 2026 after an exceptionally dry June. This reduced, but did not eliminate, the accumulated southwest monsoon rainfall deficit. The recovery was driven by Bay of Bengal low-pressure systems, favourable positioning of the monsoon trough and strong moisture-bearing winds from the Arabian Sea. However, rainfall remained highly uneven, alternating between intense wet spells and prolonged dry periods. The development is important for Kharif agriculture, water security, disaster management and assessment of the strengthening El Niño.

India-Australia Antiquities Repatriation Explained: Why Tamil Nadu Temple Artefacts Are Returning Home

Why in News

Australia has agreed to voluntarily return three 11th–12th century Tamil Nadu antiquities to India, while India will repatriate the ancestral remains of an Australian First Nations ancestor held in Chennai. The decision, welcomed during the Third India-Australia Annual Summit, is important for UPSC because it links cultural property repatriation, India’s temple-art heritage, provenance research, ethical museum practices, and international cooperation against illicit trafficking of antiquities.

Europe's 'Most Severe' Heatwave: How Attribution Science Pins the Blame on Climate Change

Why in News

A rapid scientific study released in late June 2026 has concluded that human-caused climate change is "unequivocally to blame" for the record-shattering heatwave gripping large parts of Europe — the continent's most severe June heat ever recorded. The study uses a fast-growing field called attribution science to prove the link. This article explains what the study found, how attribution science establishes the climate change fingerprint on a single weather event, why this matters for policy, the meteorology of heatwaves and heat domes, and what it all means for India's own heatwave crisis.

Why QR Codes Now on Vaccines & Antibiotics: Schedule H2, Spurious Drugs and AMR Explained

Why in News

The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) has notified amendments to the Drugs Rules, 1945, expanding the QR code-based track-and-trace framework to cover all vaccines, antimicrobials, anti-cancer medicines and narcotic and psychotropic drugs by bringing them under Schedule H2. The move aims to curb counterfeit and substandard medicines and strengthen India's fight against antimicrobial resistance (AMR). This article explains the new notification, India's drug-regulation framework under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, the meaning of various drug schedules, how QR-code traceability works, the law on spurious and substandard drugs, and the AMR connection.

Grid India's Gas-Based Power Push: Weak Monsoon, West Asia Conflict & Peak Demand Balancing Explained

Why in News

Grid Controller of India (Grid-India), the national grid operator, has advised gas-based power stations to plan fuel procurement, anticipating the need for extra gas-fired generation in June 2026. The trigger is a combination of below-normal monsoon forecasts and a West Asia conflict that has disrupted natural gas supplies. This article explains what gas-based power is, why it plays an outsized role in evening peak balancing despite a tiny share in the generation mix, how the weak monsoon and Strait of Hormuz disruptions are squeezing fuel availability, and how India prices, trades and allocates natural gas. It also covers Grid-India, the Indian Gas Exchange, India's gas-based economy target and the larger energy security picture.

El Niño and Weak Monsoon Explained: Why Maharashtra Rainfall Has Stalled and What It Means for India

Why in News

India’s southwest monsoon has shown weak progress over western India, especially Maharashtra, amid developing El Niño conditions and a large early-season rainfall deficit. IMD’s latest monsoon outlook, rainfall data and extended-range forecasts point to weak cross-equatorial flow, below-normal rainfall risk, heatwave conditions in parts of Maharashtra, and possible implications for kharif sowing, food inflation, water security and disaster preparedness.

Strait of Hormuz Explained: LNG Tanker Disha, the US-Iran Deal and India's Energy Security

Why in News

An Indian liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier, Disha, has become the first Indian merchant vessel in nearly two months to transit the Strait of Hormuz, following the announcement of a provisional US-Iran ceasefire deal that is expected to reopen the world's most important oil chokepoint. The transit, carrying Qatari LNG for India, has refocused attention on India's deep dependence on West Asian energy and on the vulnerability of a single maritime corridor. This article explains the geography of the Strait of Hormuz, the 2026 West Asia war that triggered its closure, why the chokepoint is critical for India's crude, LNG and LPG supplies, the international law on straits under UNCLOS, India's response through naval and diplomatic action, and the structural options to reduce this dependence.

India's Employment Rate Decline Explained: CMIE vs PLFS, LFPR, WPR and Jobless Growth

Why in News

Amid rising public attention on youth and jobs, India's employment data is again under the scanner. Private data from the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) shows the share of working-age Indians holding a job falling over the past decade, even as official Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) figures from the government show participation and employment ratios improving. This article explains the core concepts — working-age population, labour force, the Employment Rate (Worker Population Ratio), Labour Force Participation Rate and Unemployment Rate — clarifies why these data sources diverge, and links the debate to "jobless growth" and India's demographic dividend.

El Niño Emerges in Pacific: How ENSO, IOD and IMD's 2026 Forecast Shape India's Monsoon

Why in News

The India Meteorological Department (IMD), in its June 2026 ENSO and Indian Ocean Dipole bulletin, has confirmed that El Niño conditions have emerged over the equatorial Pacific Ocean and are likely to strengthen through the southwest monsoon season. The announcement follows a similar confirmation by the US NOAA and accompanies IMD's revised 2026 monsoon forecast of 90% of the Long Period Average — a "below normal" season. This article explains El Niño, the ENSO cycle, the Niño 3.4 index and the Indian Ocean Dipole, shows how the Walker Circulation links Pacific warming to a weaker Indian monsoon, and assesses what a deficient monsoon means for agriculture, food prices and heatwaves in India.
